Minor Slots Player Takes in Major Jackpot

A 16 year old girl who won the jackpot while playing slots in Chinese gambling paradise Macau will have her winnings paid up, despite being underage and not allowed to enter the casino in the first place.

Hong Kong women from three generations daughter, mother and grandmother, went to a casino in Macau to celebrate New Year. Grandmother gave her granddaughter a few pennies to put in the slot machines, and before anybody could say good luck, the girl was showered in coins (at least figuratively.)

The 16 year old girl won an amazing 51,000 jackpot, but it was too early to bring on the party. At first, the casino wasn’t willing to pay out any money at all, arguing that the girl, being underage, wasn’t allowed to play in the casino.

Now, Macau’s gaming authorities rules that the money should be paid out, claiming that the casino policy only specified a minimum age for entering the casino, not for gambling once inside.

"We have decided that the money must be paid, not to the child, but to her mother," said Manuel Joaquim das Neves, the Macau territory’s gaming bureau director to South China Morning Post.

The gaming bureau is modifying the jurisdiction to elucidate the regulation and exclude this ambiguity. In the meantime, the girl’s mother has been temporarily barred from Macau casinos for bringing in her underage daughter.
