Slots Tips

Many of the popular tips you hear about playing slot machines are nothing more than myths. We’ll point you in the right direction by giving you the facts. But first, let’s look at a top myth.

Myth: Look for a slot machine that hasn’t paid out. It’s bound to hit soon.

Reality: Payouts are programmed by a chip in the computer. Payout percentages reflect the payout over a long period of time, often up to a year. A year is a long time to drop coins into a machine waiting for it to pay off!

Because today’s machines are computerized and rely on the random number generator, there is only so much that you can do to erode the house advantage over the player. Over the course of a year, the machine will pay out only what it’s programmed to pay out. The casinos are not about to point you to highest-odds machines. You’ll have to find those for yourself. Casinos do, however, post their overall payouts.

10 Tips for Playing the Slots

  1. Play casinos with the highest payouts.
  2. If you’re playing in a land-based casino, choose machines in high-traffic areas. High-traffic machines generally have higher payouts and pay off more frequently to attract attention from passersby.
  3. Read the front of the machine, and make sure that you understand the slot schedule posted on the front of each machine.
  4. Always play the max coins allowed, especially on progressive machines. When you win, you’ll make more money.
  5. If you can’t afford to play the max coins, downgrade to a lower denomination machine to play max coins. It’s better to play a quarter machine at max coins than to put $1 at a time in the dollar machine.
  6. Avoid drop throughs. Make sure that the machine registers the max coins. Take your time when manually depositing coins to ensure that they register.
  7. Higher denomination machines usually pay more often than smaller denomination machines.
  8. Don’t play two slots machines positioned next to each other. Casinos use a slot placement scheme to position high-payoff machines next to low-payoff machines.
  9. Look for multiple pay line machines. Each successive coin drop opens an additional pay line.
  10. Don’t get greedy-hogs get slaughtered. Quit when you’re ahead.
